Official Data Reveals Nearly 2,150 Heat-Related Deaths in Spain During August

MADRID / RankWire.AI / – According to published daily mortality surveillance figures from the Carlos III Health Institute, almost 2,150 individuals in Spain lost their lives due to heat-related causes in August. The MoMo monitoring system officially recorded 2,149 excess deaths linked to extreme heat throughout the month, making it the second-highest August figure documented since the initiation of national data collection in 2015. As a result of consecutive European heatwaves, Spain continues to see seasonal mortality figures reach historic levels across the Iberian Peninsula.

Spain records nearly 2150 heat-related deaths in August data
Public health researchers analyze daily mortality monitoring statistics on office computers.

The only August with a higher toll was 2025, when 2,184 heat-related deaths were registered. Public health statistics indicate that from May 15 to August 31, the cumulative number of fatalities caused by thermal stress reached 5,234. This represents the highest summer mortality total recorded by Spain’s public health system since tracking began, surpassing the previous peak of 4,652 deaths during summer 2022. While Spain records nearly 2,150 heat-related deaths in August, health authorities are closely analyzing the systemic strain on regional emergency response services.

Data provided by the Ministry of Health reveal that older adults faced the greatest risk of death during the heatwaves. Of the 2,149 victims in August, 2,064 were individuals over 65, with 1,285 of them over 85 years old. Gender data shows that 1,283 of the deceased were women, while 866 were men. Medical experts have pointed out that prolonged high temperatures tend to worsen chronic cardiovascular and respiratory conditions among vulnerable populations.

Spain Approaches 2,150 Fatalities Attributed to Heat in August Spike

Regionally, Catalonia in the northeast registered the highest number of heat-related fatalities, totaling 1,164 deaths in August. Valencia followed with 227 deaths, then Andalusia with 138. Regional public health agencies have ramped up community outreach programs and increased access to cooling centers; however, persistent high nighttime temperatures continue to impede physical recovery among affected residents.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) reports that heat risks remain high into early fall. Meteorologists confirmed that a period of unusually hot weather for September has affected central and southern provinces, with daytime temperatures significantly exceeding seasonal norms. Climate scientists emphasize that Europe is experiencing more frequent, intense, and longer-lasting summer heatwaves, aligning with global warming patterns.

Over One Thousand Heat-Related Deaths Reported in Catalonia in August

National health authorities continue collaborating with local governments to strengthen preventive measures and track high-risk patients. Emergency medical teams have revised operational protocols to quickly address health issues caused by extreme heat. Ongoing public health advisories urge citizens to reduce outdoor activities during peak heat hours and stay properly hydrated amid persistent unusual atmospheric conditions.

Once September’s final surveillance data are available, government agencies plan to undertake detailed post-summer mortality assessments. Experts highlight that long-term urban infrastructure improvements and better insulation in public housing are crucial in safeguarding vulnerable populations from recurrent extreme heat events. Updated mortality statistics will be accessible through official ministry portals to guide future health policy decisions.
