European Union Allocates €2.3 Million to Enhance Cholera Control Efforts in Africa Through Targeted Interventions

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has committed €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian aid to combat cholera outbreaks in West and Central Africa. This aid will benefit Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Officials confirmed that the funds will be used for treatment, disease surveillance, expanding access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. The announcement coincides with a rise in cholera cases across several African nations during 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a notable surge mainly in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria will be allocated €1.5 million, making it the largest beneficiary of the emergency package. The funds will bolster intervention teams and supply cholera kits alongside other vital resources. Additionally, they will aid in the treatment of public water points and household water systems. Part of the support will also be directed toward enhancing disease surveillance in remote regions. The initiative additionally emphasizes case management, risk communication, and community awareness campaigns as health teams work to prevent further transmission in affected localities.

According to the most recent World Health Organization data, there have been 90,049 cholera cases reported across 18 countries within its African Region through June 28. These cases include 1,528 fatalities. Nigeria alone reported 26,848 cases and 181 deaths in the same period. In June, Nigeria documented 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths. WHO highlighted that Borno State was responsible for over 95% of Nigeria’s reported cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno identified as the most severely affected areas.

Funding prioritized for treatment, water access, and disease surveillance

The Central African Republic will receive €500,000 to support case management, vaccination efforts, and water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. The allocated funds will also bolster disease surveillance, case detection, and community engagement initiatives. Support for safe and respectful burials during outbreak responses will also be included. WHO documented 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country up to June 28. The European Commission stated that this funding constitutes part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks across these four nations.

Cameroon is set to receive €100,000 to strengthen efforts in containing the outbreak and caring for affected populations. The aid will fund additional humanitarian personnel, essential medicines, cholera treatment facilities, and oral rehydration points. As of June 28, WHO reported 108 cases and six fatalities in Cameroon. Chad will benefit from €200,000 aimed at improving water, sanitation, and hygiene practices, along with supporting community surveillance and case management. During the same reporting period, Chad recorded 109 cases and three deaths.

Nigeria’s outbreak spike propels regional rise in cases

WHO indicated that in June, the African Region saw 27,954 new cholera cases across 12 nations, marking a 95% increase compared to May. The region also recorded 284 cholera-related fatalities that month. Nigeria reported the largest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. WHO linked Nigeria’s increase to the surge in Borno State, where conflict, population displacement, poor sanitation, and heavy rainfall have heightened the risk of cholera transmission.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingesting contaminated food or water containing Vibrio cholerae bacteria, can lead to rapid dehydration in severe cases, necessitating immediate treatment. The EU’s funding aims to support measures that curb transmission and enhance healthcare access in affected regions. Overall, the total aid package for the four countries amounts to €2.3 million. The focus areas include expanding treatment capacity, strengthening surveillance systems, deploying vaccines where suitable, ensuring safer water supplies, improving sanitation, and providing direct community support throughout the ongoing outbreak management.
