UN highlights urgency as rapid spread of Ebola in DRC prompts increased international response

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian leader Tom Fletcher has emphasized the need for swift global measures amid the expanding Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which now affects six provinces. Addressing UN member states, Fletcher noted that the epidemic is progressing more rapidly than previous Ebola events. He called on governments and international donors to boost funding and facilitate humanitarian access. This appeal comes as health teams grapple with rising infection rates, ongoing insecurity, and immense strain on medical services across the eastern and northern regions of the country.

UN urges faster global action as DRC Ebola outbreak spreads
DRC Ebola response expands as health authorities confront rising cases across six provinces.

According to World Health Organization, as of September 1, the outbreak has surpassed 6,000 reported cases with nearly 3,000 fatalities. The epidemic impacts 60 health zones spanning Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo provinces. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described it as the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever and the most rapidly spreading on record. Ituri continues to be the primary transmission hotspot, accounting for the majority of cases since the outbreak began.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus and was initially identified in May 2026. WHO reiterated that the situation remains a public health emergency of international concern. As of August 26, the agency reported 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths in the DRC, with total numbers exceeding 6,000 subsequently. Additionally, 1,293 recoveries had been documented by that date. Ongoing efforts include surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, patient care, and community outreach in affected zones.

Challenges posed by conflict and fragile health infrastructure hinder Ebola containment

This Ebola crisis is unfolding amidst a broader humanitarian emergency in the DRC. Fletcher stated that nearly 11 million people are in need of aid due to conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Violence in eastern regions has hampered the work of health and relief personnel. Since activating an emergency response mechanism on June 9, the United Nations has expanded its support, establishing operational humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni to bolster field operations.

Medical workers on the frontlines face significant dangers. Fletcher reported that more than 40 healthcare workers have died from Ebola, with treatment facilities and ambulances targeted in attacks. WHO data up to July 30 revealed 151 confirmed infections among health personnel, including 44 fatalities. Emphasizing the importance of infection control, safe clinical practices, and responder safety, health agencies continue efforts to curtail transmission. WHO has also highlighted the challenge of unidentified transmission chains and deaths outside of treatment centers that complicate containment efforts.

Funding and vaccine research efforts intensify as case numbers increase

The updated 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the DRC requires a total of $2.1 billion, with $300 million allocated specifically for Ebola-related activities. Fletcher urged for increased and adaptable international funding to support both the outbreak response and the broader humanitarian mission. Meanwhile, WHO has outlined a separate six-month Ebola response plan led by the government, which needs $1.3 billion. The organization has appealed to member states to accelerate their contributions as efforts to expand surveillance, treatment capacity, laboratory services, community engagement, and other vital public health initiatives continue to grow.

On September 1, WHO also released revised guidelines on Ebola vaccination as researchers explore options against the Bundibugyo strain. The agency indicated that current evidence is insufficient to confirm whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers effective protection against this specific Ebola species in humans. It recommended the vaccine be used solely within research protocols until further clinical data becomes available. WHO and Africa CDC are supporting the Congolese government’s efforts, which include identifying cases, halting transmission, and safeguarding communities across the six affected provinces.
