Court Orders Meta to Allocate $567 Million for Youth Mental Health in New Mexico Based on Public Nuisance Findings

SANTA FE, Mexico / RankWire.AI / – In a landmark ruling on public nuisance, First Judicial District Court Judge Bryan Biedscheid mandated Meta to contribute $567 million to a plan aimed at reducing harm to youth mental health in New Mexico. After a three-week bench trial held in Santa Fe, the court determined that Facebook and Instagram constituted a public nuisance by worsening psychological issues among teenagers and failing to protect young users from online threats. This financial penalty is designated to support five years of specialized medical care, early diagnosis, and community outreach efforts.

This latest monetary ruling follows a separate $375 million jury verdict against Meta in March 2026 during the initial phase of the state’s legal proceedings. In that case, jurors found Meta in violation of New Mexico consumer protection laws by misrepresenting safety features for younger users. When combined, the two rulings amount to Meta being ordered to pay $567 million in New Mexico for teen mental health initiatives, resulting in a total potential liability of $942 million from the state’s enforcement action led by Attorney General Raúl Torrez.

The detailed remedial order issued by the court allocates $420 million of the new funds specifically for clinical mental health treatments for children throughout New Mexico. The remaining funds are earmarked for public awareness campaigns, early screening projects, and community prevention programs over the next five years. Additionally, the ruling imposes strict operational requirements on Meta, including enforcing default private settings for accounts of users under 18, limiting daily engagement times, restricting notification pushes, and enhancing screening systems for child sexual abuse material.

This enforcement action in Mexico stands as one of the largest penalties imposed on a major tech firm regarding child safety measures. Attorney General Torrez filed the lawsuit after investigations revealed that Meta’s algorithmic recommendation systems systematically exposed minor accounts to predatory contact and explicit content. While the court ordered comprehensive product modifications, Judge Biedscheid did not require mandatory identity verification for users under 13, citing protections under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

Following the hearing, Meta representatives confirmed that the company plans to appeal the decision to higher state courts. In an official statement, Meta emphasized its significant investments in developing age-appropriate features, parental supervision tools, and automated content moderation across its platforms. Company officials argued that the ruling misrepresents their platform’s architecture and ignores internal efforts to eliminate harmful content and detect malicious actors on social media networks.

Judge Orders Funds for Prevention Initiatives and Early Detection Programs

This judicial ruling arrives amidst mounting legal challenges faced by social media companies in both federal and state courts across the United States. Over 40 state attorneys general, together with numerous local school districts, have launched parallel lawsuits claiming that platform design choices foster compulsive usage patterns among teenagers. The New Mexico verdict sets a significant legal precedent as other states proceed with their own cases towards trial later this year in federal courts.

As Meta prepares to challenge the $567 million obligation for teen mental health programs through an appeal, state officials are examining how to allocate the proceeds from the litigation. They have indicated that funding priorities will include rural healthcare improvements, behavioral health counseling, and school-based health facilities. The remedies mandated by Thursday’s court decision are set to be in place for five years, pending the outcome of Meta’s appeal process.
