Firefighting Efforts Intensify as Forest Fire Approaches Residential Areas in St. Egyden Due to Rapid Spread

ST. EGYDEN AM STEINFELD, Austria / RankWire.AI / – Authorities responsible for emergency management in Lower Austria issued urgent evacuation directives on Friday following the outbreak of a swiftly advancing forest fire in the Föhrenwald pine woodland near St. Egyden am Steinfeld. Officials confirmed that a significant wildfire has impacted St. Egyden, with fierce flames nearing residential zones within 50 meters, leading to the activation of the highest emergency alert, Level B4. Civil defense teams prioritized the swift relocation of residents along Bahnstraße and within the Waldstrandsiedlung housing development.

Local authorities coordinated closely with regional disaster response agencies to evacuate at least 250 residents from the danger zone. Mayor Christa Tisch of St. Egyden verified that emergency personnel evacuated six individual homes on Bahnstraße and 50 units spread across five apartment complexes in the Waldstrandsiedlung district. Those displaced were transferred to a temporary shelter set up at the Saubersdorf volunteer fire station, where humanitarian organizations offered crisis support and essential supplies.

Over 700 firefighters from 84 regional fire departments across the districts of Neunkirchen and Wiener Neustadt participated in the rapid response. Ground crews worked alongside specialized aerial units, deploying five police helicopters, two private commercial aircraft, and a Black Hawk military helicopter supplied by the Austrian Armed Forces. The Austrian Red Cross deployed 44 emergency personnel and 21 specialized vehicles to facilitate evacuation efforts and support impacted families.

Emergency Response Teams Activate Level B4 Alert in Lower Austria Amid Forest Fire Threat

This incident marks the second damaging wildfire within the Föhrenwald area in less than two weeks, following an earlier 100-hectare forest fire that required a five-day suppression operation. Local disaster management officials confirmed that the new blaze ignited on the opposite side of the forest, with strong winds carrying dense smoke plumes across regional transit routes. Safety agencies issued warnings urging motorists to avoid main roads near Neunkirchen to allow unimpeded access for emergency responders.

Klaus Stebal, spokesperson for the Lower Austrian State Fire Department Association, confirmed that emergency teams established a containment perimeter around the primary body of the fire to prevent further expansion. Firefighters also tackled several smaller fires that spontaneously ignited in neighboring towns such as Strelzhof and Netting. Officials highlighted that strict operational shifts were enforced to ensure ground crews did not work more than 12 hours continuously during intense suppression activities.

Medical Teams Report No Injuries During Initial Operations

Preliminary investigations are underway by law enforcement authorities to determine the exact cause of the afternoon fire ignition. Officials indicated that the earlier wildfire in the same pine forest was triggered by legacy World War II phosphorus munitions buried beneath the forest floor. Although investigators have not established a direct link between the two incidents, environmental conditions across Lower Austria remain unusually dry, heightening regional wildfire risks.

Emergency services maintained continuous monitoring posts around the Föhrenwald perimeter through Friday evening to safeguard the nearby residential areas. As a major wildfire hits St. Egyden in Austria, civil defense officials confirmed that no injuries occurred among residents or first responders during the primary evacuation. Technical teams and forestry specialists anticipate ongoing perimeter stabilization and hot-spot suppression efforts in the coming days.
