Temperature Peak of 40.3°C in Austria’s July Sets New Record Due to Heatwave

WIESELBURG, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria experienced its highest July temperature on July 31, when Wieselburg hit 40.3 degrees Celsius. This measurement surpassed the previous July record of 39.7 degrees, which was recorded in Dellach im Drautal in 1983. GeoSphere Austria verified the record-breaking monthly temperature amid a heatwave centered on eastern regions of the nation. The all-time national temperature record remains 40.5 degrees, observed at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in August 2013.

Austria records 40.3C July heat and €1.4bn losses
Austria’s 40.3C July record came during a prolonged period of severe heat.

This July milestone follows a June characterized by widespread, persistent extreme heat. According to GeoSphere Austria, 157 of its 277 weather stations recorded new maximum temperatures for June. Additionally, 66 stations documented their highest temperatures ever registered in any month. Vienna reached 40.0 degrees on June 28, and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg recorded 40.1 degrees the next day. Multiple low-altitude areas experienced 10 to 14 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.

The Wegener Center at the University of Graz estimated that the combined socioeconomic impact of the June and late July heatwaves amounted to roughly €1.4 billion. This preliminary estimate accounts for health effects, lost productivity, agricultural damages, infrastructure stress, and increased cooling demands. It also considers impacts on ecosystems and public services. However, this figure does not represent an official government assessment or insured-loss total; insurance data only include damages covered under active policies.

Heatwave intensity exceeds previous Austrian event

The Wegener Center assessed the events through the measure of area-degree days, which integrate heat intensity, duration, and geographical spread. The June heatwave was estimated at approximately 16,700 area-degree days, while the late July episode ranged between 22,700 and 25,000. Austria’s previous record occurred during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which reached about 22,100 area-degree days across land below 1,500 meters elevation.

Extreme temperatures also coincided with a notable rise in heat-related fatalities. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety estimated 395 such deaths in June 2026, marking the highest June total since the agency started tracking this statistic. Heat-related mortality refers to deaths occurring above expected levels during periods of unusually high temperatures, without necessarily attributing heat as the sole cause on death certificates.

Prolonged drought worsens Austria’s water and soil conditions

Austria’s heatwave followed several months of unusually dry weather. From January 1 to July 27, total nationwide rainfall reached about 426 millimeters, which is roughly 30% below the long-term average of 609 millimeters for the same period. Authorities described the first seven months of 2026 as the driest comparable stretch since at least the early 1900s. Notably, Lower Austria, Vienna, and northern Burgenland registered some of the most significant rainfall deficits.

Persistent high-pressure systems, intense sunshine, and scarce rainfall amplified evaporation throughout late spring and summer. These conditions diminished soil moisture and increased stress on crops, rivers, forests, and water supplies. Climate records indicate that Austria has seen a rise in frequency, duration, and intensity of heatwaves over recent decades. The average maximum temperatures during such events have increased by about three degrees between the 1980s and the 2020s. The new July record further confirms the upward trend of Austria’s extreme heat episodes.
