UK Solar Capacity Hits 22.8 GW Ahead of Upcoming Plug-in Regulations

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – UK solar power capacity reached 22.8 gigawatts at the close of June 2026. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero reported approximately 2.076 million installations across the country. During June alone, households, businesses, and developers added 27,391 systems, resulting in 132 megawatts of new capacity. These figures remain provisional and may be revised once additional project data is incorporated into the national database. The overall total encompasses domestic rooftop setups, commercial sites, and utility-scale solar farms.

UK solar market reaches 22.8 GW before new plug-in rules
New UK plug-in solar rules set an 800-watt limit for approved household systems.

June ranked as the second-highest month for installation numbers within the UK data series, with March 2026 holding the record at 28,782 systems added. Over the year leading to June, solar capacity grew by 2.2 gigawatts, reflecting a 10.9% increase. Additionally, about 269,000 systems were installed in 2025, marking the highest annual total ever recorded. While smaller rooftop arrays led in installation count, larger projects contributed significantly to the overall increase in generating capacity.

Focus now shifts to the plug-in solar rules set to take effect on August 27, 2026. The new framework permits qualified microgenerators to connect via a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible products are limited to a maximum of 800 watts of alternating current output. They must comply with Interim Product Specification version 2 and operate safely within the local distribution network. Notably, the regulations exclude plug-in batteries and devices that store electricity imported from household circuits.

    Safety regulations oversee plug-in connections

This legal update amends the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 along with the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The amendment introduces a narrow exception to existing plug restrictions used for generating equipment. Each plug must be confirmed as compliant by a notified body, verifying it meets the relevant BS 1363 standards. While product approval applies nationwide, the electricity safety amendment specifically covers England, Wales, and Scotland.

The interim specification outlines requirements for electrical design, mounting systems, fire protection, labels, and consumer instructions. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products under domestic wiring conditions, with controlled testing showing stable operation and no signs of unsafe energization or thermal issues. The study also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality. These findings contributed to establishing a UK-specific safety standard for products entering the legal market.

Retailers prepare for the new approved products

In response to the government consultation, 466 responses were received from businesses, specialists, regulators, and the public. Over 85% of respondents supported the interim specification, and most also endorsed the plug-related amendments. Participants included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer organizations. Some emphasized concerns about older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the importance of clear instructions. Others urged authorities to clearly distinguish plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.

Major retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are actively preparing for the new product category. This format offers an alternative for households unable to install traditional rooftop systems, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. Systems utilizing the new connection method will not be legally operable before August 27. Starting on that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through a standard household socket. The 22.8 GW capacity total for June does not include systems that will operate under this new plug-in framework.
