Frontex Reports 37% Decline in Irregular Border Crossings into EU by July 2026 Based on Preliminary Data

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – According to early Frontex statistics, the number of irregular border crossings into the European Union decreased by 37% during the first seven months of 2026. The agency recorded roughly 61,000 detections at the bloc’s external borders from Jan. 1 through July 31, which is lower compared to the same timeframe in 2025. The majority of key migration routes experienced fewer crossings during this period. These figures serve as the latest indicator of irregular migration activity across the EU’s external frontiers.

The Eastern Mediterranean remained the most active route, with 20,232 detections, representing a 28% decrease from 28,068 during the same months in 2025. The Central Mediterranean followed with 16,454 detections, down 55% from 36,656. Collectively, these two routes accounted for approximately 60% of all detections included in the EU’s entry statistics. Libya continued to be the primary departure country on the Central Mediterranean route over the seven-month period.

Conversely, the Western Mediterranean saw an increase, recording 11,217 detections—up 37% from 8,175 in the previous year. Sea crossings on this route reached 8,648, compared with 7,096 in 2025. Land detections until June totaled 2,569, rising from 1,079. The Western African route experienced a 60% reduction, with detections falling to 4,682. Similarly, crossings through the Western Balkan routes declined by 26%, totaling 4,910, and detections at the Eastern Land Border decreased by 44%, reaching 3,209.

EU Border Detections Mostly Driven by Mediterranean Routes

Separate data concerning crossings through the United Kingdom showed a significant drop as well. Frontex reported 22,469 attempts or successful crossings leaving the EU, marking a 46% decrease from 41,647. These Channel crossing figures are not included in the EU entry totals. Furthermore, the agency noted 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, a 9% increase. The seven-month statistics exclude extraordinary incidents at the external border in Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its data on provisional EUROSUR information and estimates available as of Aug. 4. The agency emphasized that revisions might occur later as authorities update the data. These statistics reflect detection counts, not the number of individual persons, meaning an individual might be counted multiple times if crossing at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction is important when comparing route-specific totals with the overall number of migrants involved.

The Seven-Month Data Continues the Trend of Decrease from the First Half of 2026

The latest figures build on the pattern observed after the first six months of 2026. At that point, Frontex recorded over 49,000 irregular border crossings, also a 37% decline compared to the previous year. During that period, detections in the Western Mediterranean were 17% higher than in 2025. However, the seven-month comparison shows a 37% increase. The Western African route experienced a 67% decline through June and a 60% drop through July.

Frontex reports that approximately 3,800 officers are deployed at the EU’s external borders. Their responsibilities include supporting national authorities with border management, maritime rescue operations, and ensuring compliance with the rules of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest data highlight that route trends remain uneven, with most major corridors showing significant declines, except for a rise in crossings along the Western Mediterranean route.
